UPDATE Baychester: Arrests Made after Fatal Multiple Shooting by Haffen Park

Police said they’ve arrested four people, including two teens, after several people were shot in the vicinity of Haffen Park on Saturday evening, Aug. 23, in the Baychester section of The Bronx, including a 32-year-old man who is dead, and a 17-year-old girl who is in critical condition.

 

According to the NYPD, on Aug. 23 at around 7.27 p.m., police from the 47th Precinct received a 911 call reporting multiple people shot at Burke Avenue and Wickham Avenue, beside Haffen Park, where reportedly a basketball tournament was taking place.

 

“Upon arrival, officers located a 32-year-old male with a gunshot wound to his chest and a 17-year-old female with a gunshot wound to her face,” a police spokesperson said. “EMS responded and transported both victims to Jacob Medical Center in Morris Park in critical condition, where the 32-year-old male was pronounced deceased by hospital staff.”

 

They said the 17-year-old woman remains is critical condition. Additionally, police were informed of multiple other people who were transported by private means to local area hospitals. A 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman were also both transported by private means to Jacobi each with a gunshot wound to their back and are listed in stable condition.

Lastly, police said a 42-year-old man was transported by private means to Montefiore Hospital with a gunshot wound to his arm and is also listed in stable condition. Police said four people were arrested and the investigation remains ongoing.

 

We had previously asked police if they could share any additional information about the circumstances which led up to the shootings and they said it was still under investigation, but stated that the shootings took place outside on the street.

 

A vigil was held subsequently to remember the victims and to call for an end to gun violence, which has become a focal point of the upcoming mayoral election.

 

On Sunday, Aug. 24, police said the deceased was identified as Jaceil Banks, a 32-year-old man from the Highbridge section of The Bronx. 
All defendants are deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

 

Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, on the same day, police said several people were arrested and charged at around 8 p.m. in the confines of the 47th Precinct, which covers the Bronx neighborhoods of Woodlawn, Wakefield, Williamsbridge, Baychester, Edenwald, Olinville, Fishbay, and also includes Woodlawn Cemetery.

 

They said an unnamed 16-year-old male was arrested and charged with murder, 4 counts of attempted murder, gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. They said also arrested was an unnamed 17-year-old male who was charged with murder, 4 counts of attempted murder, gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.

 

Police said that Daeven Reyes, 20, from the North Riverdale section of The Bronx was also charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder, gang assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.

 

Additionally, they said they also arrested Robert Royal, 25, from the Highbridge section of The Bronx and charged him with murder, four counts of attempted murder, and criminal possession of a weapon.

 

All defendants are deemed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.

 

As reported, police also announced arrests following another deadly multiple shooting in Allerton on Monday, Sept. 1, which was followed by a vehicle collision.
