10,000 New Trees For Parks

Led by the city’s Parks Department, volunteers planted 10,000 trees on It’s My Park! Day. The Oct. 20 effort was part of Mayor Bloomberg’s Million Trees NYC initiative, which aims to plant one million trees in the next 10 years.

In addition to planting trees, volunteers raked leaves, planted flowers, and re-painted benches in 200 different parks citywide.

It’s My Park! Day, an initiative of Partnership for Parks, fulfilled the Parks Department’s goal of planting 10,000 park trees this fall, to be followed by an additional 10,000 street trees. In the next 10 years they plan to expand the city’s urban forests by 20 percent, adding 600,000 public trees, reforesting 2,000 acres of parks, and lining city streets with green.

PlaNYC is calling on non-profits, businesses, community organizations, property owners, and every New Yorker to plant the additional 400,000 trees to bring the city to its goal of one million. According to PlaNYC, having one million new trees in the city will raise property values, reduce environmental impact, save energy, and create a higher quality of life for all residents.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
