Now that the primary election results are finalized, most winning candidates have to focus on the upcoming general election on Nov. 3. However, in the Bronx, the Democratic primaries are usually indicative of the general election winner.
According to New York State voter enrollment statistics, 76 percent of registered voters in the Bronx are Democrats. A meager seven percent are registered Republicans.
However, these daunting figures have not discouraged a few non-Democrats from entering local Council races.
In the 11th District, Republican Stylo A. Sapaskis and Stephen Bradian, who is on the Conservative ticket, are running against the Democratic incumbent, Oliver Koppell.
In the 14th District, Yessenia Duran is running as a Republican against Reverend Fernando Cabrera, who won the Democratic primary.
Little information is known about any of these challengers. None of them have done much in the way of campaigning.
Duran does have a campaign Web site (www.yesseniaduran.com). The site is basically one picture of Duran, the general election date, lots of empty space and several non-working links to information. The site has not been updated since August.
