It took nine days, but Fernando Cabrera’s unofficial 90-vote lead over 14th Council District incumbent Maria Baez on primary night held up to scrutiny. After a full recount and adding up of all paper ballots, Cabrera, a pastor and college professor, took the hotly contested primary by a total of 75 votes.
On Thursday, Sept. 24, the Board of Elections certified the results of the 14th Council District, which includes the Fordham, Kingsbridge Heights, Morris Heights, and Mount Hope neighborhoods.
In a breakdown of the voting patterns, Cabrera garnered key victories in the 77th and 78th assembly districts. Cabrera won big in the 78th, which is represented by Jose Rivera, a strong supporter of Baez.
Baez attracted a solid majority of votes in the 86th District and edged out Cabrera by three votes in the 81st District. Third place finisher Yudelka Tapia managed to win in the 84th District and garnered a total of 1,330 votes.
Cabrera won with a total of 2,108 votes, with Baez coming in a close second with 2,033 votes. In total, only 5,473 votes were cast, representing only a small fraction of the 14th District’s registered Democratic voters.
