Van Cortlandt Park: Male Pedestrian Killed in Car Accident

A 30-year-old male pedestrian has died following a car accident in Van Cortlandt Park, police said.

 

An NYPD spokesperson said that on Wednesday, March 4, at around 1.26 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call regarding a pedestrian who had been struck in the vicinity of the Major Deegan Expressway and Jerome Avenue, within the confines of the 50th Precinct.

 

“A preliminary investigation revealed that a 42-year-old male was operating a 2011 white Jeep traveling southbound in the left lane of the Major Deegan Expressway when he struck a 30-year-old male pedestrian who was crossing the highway from west to east,” the spokesperson said.

POLICE SAID A fatal motor vehicle collision occured in the vicinity of Jerome Avenue and the Major Deegan Expressway (in Van Cortlandt Park) on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

“The pedestrian suffered severe trauma throughout the body and was transported by EMS to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased,” the spokesperson added.

 

Police said the driver of the Jeep remained at the scene, there are no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad. They said the deceased has been identified as:

 

Douty Soumahoro, 30, of Norwood, The Bronx.

 

With collisions investigations, the NYPD handles all criminal aspects of the investigation, while NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) reviews the street design at the locations of such crashes.
