Police said a 40-year-old man was found deceased at the 242nd Street subway station on Wednesday, Jan. 28, in Fieldston. It follows news of a double shooting close to the same location in the early hours of Sunday morning, Jan. 25, as reported.
Police said that on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at around 11.36 a.m., officers from the 50th Precinct / Transit police responded to a 911 regarding an aided person at the Van Cortlandt Park subway station on the northbound “1” train.

“Upon arrival, officers observed a 40-year-old male, unconscious and unresponsive on the train,” a police spokesperson said, adding that EMS responded and pronounced the victim deceased on scene. “The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death,” the spokesperson said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
Police said the identity of the deceased is pending proper family notification. Meanwhile, an FDNY spokesperson said the department received a call at 11.38 a.m. on Wednesday for a report of a cardiac arrest (heart attack) at 5969 Broadway (R197) at 242nd Street and Van Cortlandt Avenue in The Bronx, and that one person was found deceased on arrival at the scene.
A local resident had told Norwood News. “Right at my station, they found a dead person. They haven’t said much.” The resident said it didn’t appear to be related to the recent shooting at the station on Sunday. “But it’s like oh my God! That just happened and now this,” she said. “I’m not sure if the person froze, if it was a homeless person, I don’t know.” She said the area is usually safe.
