Police said a 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with the rape of a 19-year-old woman in Belmont on Sept. 17.
The department had been asking for the public’s help identifying the person seen in the attached video and photo who they said was wanted in connection with the incident.
Police said that on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at around 3 a.m., a 19-year-old female victim was sitting on a bench in the vicinity of Park Avenue and East 183rd Street when an unidentified person approached and sexually assaulted her. They said the suspect then fled the location on foot, traveling eastbound on 183rd Street to parts unknown. They said the victim refused medical attention at the scene.

Police said the suspect was described as male, had a dark complexion, and was last seen wearing a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants, and black shoes.
Pursuant to an ongoing investigation, on Sept. 19, police said Xavier Chapman, 30, of Belmont was arrested and charged the same day at 8.30 a.m. in the 41st Precinct, which covers the neighborhoods of Hunts Point and Longwood.
They said he was charged with rape, sexual abuse, and harassment. He is presumed innocent unless and until convicted in a court of law.
