Two weeks ago, Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. took his case for the Bronx to Washington, DC. It marked his first official trip to the nation’s capital.
Diaz didn’t waste much time as he met with all the Bronx’s federal elected officials, including senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and congressmen Jose Serrano, Eliot Engel and Joe Crowley. He also met with his predecessor Adolfo Carrion, who is now head of the Obama administration’s urban affairs office as well as Long Island congressman Steve Israel.
Diaz and Israel met to discuss the recently launched New York State Intergovernmental Energy Partnership, which the two co-founded. The partnership is a coalition of Empire State elected officials who are working on making New York the leader in green energy innovation.
“There are a number of areas where federal funding can help our borough, from job creation to green development to modernizing our transportation hubs,” Diaz said in a statement after the trip. “These meetings represent the beginning of my administration’s efforts to bring more federal dollars to our borough, and I look forward to working with the White House and our leaders in Washington to bring that funding to the Bronx.”
