On May 28, the ballroom at the Jewish Home Lifecare’s Adult Day Care program on Kingsbridge Road was filled with over 100 people, toe-tapping music, strobe lights and a panel of four judges to create a Bronx-style senior adaptation of the ABC hit show, “Dancing with the Stars.”

During the competition, 12 couples competed for the honor of winning the first place dance routine. Each couple was comprised of an Adult Day Care client and a staff member. Although all of the couples danced well, it was Herbert Wolf and his occupational therapist, Anafe Casas (pictured above), who triumphed with their seductive tango.

Another noteworthy performance was that of Nancy Madera and the Adult Care Program Coordinator, Louie Vargas. Their enthusiastic salsa moves helped them win second place in the competition and even succeeded in getting Bronx Assemblyman Jose Rivera to take to the dance floor. After the performance, Madera took the stage a second time with Rivera as her salsa partner.

“This looks like the kind of place where I’d like to hang out,” Rivera said.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
