Bronx Congressman Jose E. Serrano and his son, Bronx State Senator Jose Marco Serrano, are joining Governor David Paterson and other elected officials in supporting New York State’s efforts to legalize same-sex marriage.

“Our friends and family members in the lesbian and gay community deserve the same rights in all areas of the law as other couples,” said the elder Serrano in a statement. “Marriage has many benefits, and we should not deny them to couples who are in loving, committed relationships.”

Several state senators have not stated their opposition to the proposed legislation, but the Bronx’s Ruben Diaz, Sr. (father of new Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr.) is adamantly opposed. Last month, he called an emergency summit on gay marriage with the New York Hispanic Clergy Coalition.

The legislation is expected to pass in the State Assembly, and activists are now working to secure votes from senators like Ruth Hassell-Thompson, a Democrat who represents parts of Westchester and the Bronx, who has not publicly stated how she will vote.
The measure is supposed to come up for a vote in the very near future.

Welcome to the Norwood News, a bi-weekly community newspaper that primarily serves the northwest Bronx communities of Norwood, Bedford Park, Fordham and University Heights. Through our Breaking Bronx blog, we focus on news and information for those neighborhoods, but aim to cover as much Bronx-related news as possible. Founded in 1988 by Mosholu Preservation Corporation, a not-for-profit affiliate of Montefiore Medical Center, the Norwood News began as a monthly and grew to a bi-weekly in 1994. In September 2003 the paper expanded to cover University Heights and now covers all the neighborhoods of Community District 7. The Norwood News exists to foster communication among citizens and organizations and to be a tool for neighborhood development efforts. The Norwood News runs the Bronx Youth Journalism Heard, a journalism training program for Bronx high school students.
