The high toxicity levels of a known cancer-causing chemical found at the site of a Bedford Park building that housed PS 51, the Bronx New School, until 2011, poses an increased risk for health effects for students, teachers and staff members who attended and worked at the school, according to a new report by the state health department.
Members of PS 51 Parents United, a group consisting of parents of current and former PS 51students and members of the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC), say the DOE and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott are not making an effort to reach out to parents of former students about the contamination. They are frustrated that he hasn’t met with them despite their health concerns.
In late March, the parents of current and former PS 51 students met with state officials to ask questions and discuss their concerns about potential health effects caused by exposure to contamination at the school’s former site on Jerome Avenue.
A former PS 51 teacher plans to file a lawsuit against the DOE, claiming the toxic Bedford Park building was the cause of a birth defect in her unborn baby.
